Shakespeare’s First Folio Signing Event

Shakespeare’s First Folio Signing

In April 2024, Emily and Mouse headed down to Rugby, Warwickshire for the official signing event of the new Shakespeare’s First Folio.

The Telegraph posted a lovely ***** review of the book, as did The Wall Street Journal and The Times (click each link to read more.)

Emily and Mouse, with author Dr. Anjna Chouhan, speak at Rugby Library in April 2024 about creating the book.

Ruff! Ruff!

Mouse in her Shakespearean ruff supervises Emily’s book signing.

The Telegraph wrote: “The book is illustrated by Emily Sutton, who has supplied more than 150 ingeniously detailed watercolour drawings, including 36 title-pages, and 300 odd character portraits ranging from Macbeth to Crab, the “sourest-natured” dog in The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

The colourful, contemporary style of her drawings makes a clever contrast with the complexity of the language.”

Below is a slideshow you can scroll through or simply watch, of some of the play covers made by Emily as they appear in the book:

Here’s a little video of Emily adding detail to one of the roughs for these covers, followed by a gallery of rough versions of some of the covers above!

And finally, here’s a glimpse into the process of printing the book with Walker Books: the images are scanned and reproduced digitally and then painstakingly assembled into the final book, which you can buy HERE and at all good book retailers.

Mouse approves, which is all that really matters in the end. Exit, pursued by a… Mouse?
