I painted the study for this image on a rainy November day. The early 19th Century shopping arcades in Paris (as well as being very useful for seeking shelter) are treasure troves of detail, whether in the painted shop signs, the jigsaw of patterned floor tiles or the intimate cafes that line the long corridors and come to life at lunchtime.
